The Trump administration has spent the last year attacking voting rights ahead of the midterms tomorrow. I’m Ari Berman, a national voting rights correspondent at Mother Jones Magazine. Ask me anything.

President Donald Trump’s months-long effort to interfere in the midterms has played out in plain view. We’ve watched the GOP’s legal crusade to restrict and disrupt mail-in voting, dilute Black voting power by redistricting Black-majority districts, and gut the Voting Rights Act using arguments from the Jim Crow era.

Tomorrow, we’ll see if all of their efforts worked.

Hi! I’m Ari Berman. I cover national voting rights at Mother Jones, and I’m also the author of Minority Rule: The Right-Wing Attack on the Will of the People—and the Fight to Resist It, and Give Us the Ballot: The Modern Struggle for Voting Rights in America. I’ve written about the end of the VRA, gerrymandering, and the judiciary's growing influence over our elections.

I just got back from a reporting trip to Alabama, where I saw how the Supreme Court’s decision to gut the Voting Rights Act is playing out on the ground among Black voters. We’ve seen huge turnout among Black voters during early voting across the South, who are mobilizing in response to the Louisiana v. Callais decision. That could be a preview of a possible blue wave tomorrow.

Ask me anything about attacks on voting rights and the effort to manipulate who can vote and how in the 2026 and 2028 elections.

I’ll start answering questions at 1 p.m. ET
