Hi r/IAmA, I’m Dr Xiaolan Liu, a Lecturer at the University of Bristol. I research how AI-6G networks and how they could shape the next generation of communication networks.
But this AMA is also about something I get frequently asked about: what happens after a PhD if you want to build a career in academia?
I completed my PhD at Queen Mary University of London before I worked as a researcher at King’s College London, became a Lecturer at Loughborough University, and eventually moved to the University of Bristol. Throughout my career, I’ve learned how to build a research profile, teach and supervise students, apply for funding, collaborate internationally, develop my own research ideas, and build my own research team.
