I am Dr Emily van der Nagel, author of the first scholarly book on OnlyFans. Ask me anything!

I'll be starting this AMA on Wednesday 19 August 9am Melbourne time/UTC+10, or Tuesday 18 August 4pm San Francisco time/UTC-7. Please leave your questions below for me!

Hi Reddit! I'm Emily van der Nagel, social media researcher at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. I teach undergraduate media studies and research social media, platforms, and digital intimacies.

I've been fascinated by NSFW Reddit since my PhD years (2012-2017), and have published research on the value of social media anonymity on the GoneWild subreddit, alt accounts across platforms, and co-authored the Manifesto for Sex Positive Social Media, a list of demands that would make platforms safer places for sexual expression.

My book OnlyFans will be released this October with Polity Press. It's a scholarly, peer-reviewed platform study that takes on a sex-positive perspective to argue that the practices, cultures, and economies of OnlyFans are an essential part of contemporary social media.

I'd love to answer your questions about OnlyFans, researching NSFW social media, and academia in general.
