I’ve been testing and reviewing mattresses and sleep products with Mattress Clarity for over 8 years now. With the 4th of July mattress sales coming up, I thought I’d open it up for questions.
You’re probably seeing a bunch of brands offering deals and sales, but I’m happy to offer model suggestions or tips on finding an actually good deal.
But, to get you started, here are a few things I like to keep in mind when picking out a mattress:
- Sleeping position: This is the main thing I think about. Depending on whether you’re a side, back, or stomach sleeper, you may need something firmer or softer.
- Firmness preference: At the same time, some people just like something firmer or softer. Just make sure to read reviews, as “soft” or “firm” can mean a lot of different things when you’re comparing brands.
- Body type/weight: This is a big one. I’m a larger guy, and certain mattresses might feel firmer or softer to me when compared to a lightweight sleeper.
- Sleeping hot: If you wake up hot and sweaty, generally, I recommend staying away from strict memory foam mattresses. Innerspring, hybrid, and latex mattresses are usually a better bet.
- Final queen price: I usually compare queen pricing first because this makes it easier to compare across brands.
- Trial and return policy: Even during a sale period, make sure that the trial period gives you enough time to make sure the mattress is actually working for you.
- Bundles: Free pillows or sheets can be great, but I’d still focus on the mattress first.
- Marketing language: Some of these sales are great, but don’t let a countdown timer rush your decision.
I mostly review online mattresses, and most of those brands have sales going on in the next few weeks. You’ll probably come across sales for Saatva, Helix, Nectar, DreamCloud, WinkBeds, Brooklyn Bedding, Avocado, Tempur-Pedic, Bear, and Purple. You’ll also see sales for brands like Beautyrest and Sealy as well.
If you’re shopping for a mattress this week, ask me anything. Drop your budget, sleeping position, body type, whether you sleep hot, and what types of mattresses you’ve liked in the past. I’ll try my best to help you narrow it down!
