I’ve been following Roblox for a while now, partly because I have younger siblings who play it all the time, and partly because I’ve always been fascinated by how these open platforms for user-generated content grow and manage safety. But tbh, in the last couple years it’s become painfully obvious that the scale of sexual predation targeting minors on Roblox is way worse than most parents or even players seem to realize. And I don’t think the company has really figured out a meaningful way to deal with it beyond PR statements and reactive bans.
To give some background for anyone who doesn’t know, Roblox isn’t really just one game, it’s like a whole ecosystem of user-created “experiences.” Anyone can set one up, script interactions, and invite others to play. That’s part of what makes it so impressive, but it’s also what opens the door for predators. The game’s base is overwhelmingly made up of kids, many of them under 13, and although there are content filters, parental controls, and safety teams, predators constantly find ways around them. They create games that look innocent but lead to private chats, they move conversations off-platform to apps like Discord or Snapchat, and they use voice chats or avatars to build false intimacy.
I think one of the biggest issues here is that Roblox markets itself as “safe for kids,” which makes parents drop their guard. They see the kiddie visuals and Lego-style characters and assume it’s just another version of Minecraft or something. But Roblox is structured more like a social network than a single-player game. Every player is potentially interacting with strangers, and the chat and friend systems make it pretty easy to create relationships that look harmless on the surface.
Some of the investigative reporting on this stuff has been really heartbreaking. You’ll see stories about adults grooming kids in-game, getting them to share private info, or moving conversations to DMs. There have been arrests, even, where the trail started with a Roblox game chat. And every time something like that hits the news, Roblox Corp makes a statement about safety, maybe rolls out a new trust-and-safety feature, but then things calm down, and the same patterns keep showing up again.
I get that moderation at this scale is insanely hard. There are literally millions of experiences and billions of chat messages going through Roblox servers every day. Even with tens of thousands of moderators and AI filters, no system can catch everything. But what worries me is how they design for children’s safety to begin with. For example, the chat filtering is inconsistent. Kids often learn ways to bypass filters by using spaces, alternate letters, or symbols. It’s basically a constant cat and mouse game.
One of the bigger problems imo is education. Both for players and parents. So many parents think that because it’s a “kids platform,” they don’t have to be involved. Meanwhile, predators exploit that exact trust. And the kids, who might be like 10 or 11, don’t even realize they’re in danger because they just see another “friendly” player offering them Robux or asking them to join a “special game.” Roblox itself has parental guides and educational videos, but most people never look at those.
Then there are developers. Some of the teen or adult devs running games on the platform have huge audiences of kids. That comes with responsibility that not everyone takes seriously. There’ve been complaints about devs having inappropriate relationships with their younger fans or making games that replicate mature situations and secretly slip through moderation. Roblox tries to address this by banning certain keywords and models, but again, enforcement is way behind the speed of content creation
