I have nearly two decades of experience in journalism and previously was a national writer on race for the Associated Press. And also worked at the Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post.
In the Amendment newsletter I try to highlight folks working to make space at the table for themselves and others in politics and to highlight people who aren’t part of the major news stories.
This week I wrote about Juneteenth ahead of tomorrow’s holiday. It became a federal holiday in 2021 and this year is the first time it’s being celebrated under a Trump presidency.
I spoke with Dr. Kaye Wise Whitehead, president of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, the organization that founded Black History Month, for perspective on how to consider Juneteenth this year.
What questions do you have about the holiday? Curious about its history or how folks are observing this year? Want to know more about my work or The Amendment? Ask me!
